I believe Jesus found the merchants doing business directly within the temple. For generations, those who sold animals for sacrifice, and money changers, had done business NEAR the temple, but not IN it Jesus didn't condemn the businesses themselves; He condemned conducting them within the temple.

I see no problem with a church's having a rummage sale, etc. outside the confines of its sanctuary, or using other legitimate means to raise funds. The utility companies and maintenance services don't serve churches for free.
